The experience
The day starts at 12:30 pm from your Salalah hotel. You'll head first to Wadi Dawkha, a World Heritage Site where frankincense trees grow in the desert. The guide explains how the resin is harvested and what it was worth to the traders who crossed these routes centuries ago. A stop in Thumrait follows, where you pause for Omani coffee or tea, then move on to Ubar, the archaeological remains of a lost city that sat at the crossroads of the Empty Quarter before 2000 BC. This was the hub where merchants and travelers met before the trade routes shifted.
Before the dunes, you'll visit a black camel farm in the desert and have the chance to drink fresh camel milk. Then the route heads into the Empty Quarter itself. The guide drives up the sand dunes so you can watch the sunset from the top. If you've booked the sunset option, you'll return to Salalah after dark, a two-and-a-half-hour drive back. If you've chosen the overnight version, you'll stay in a Bedouin tent in the desert and return the next morning, turning the experience into a full immersion in the landscape.
The tour is tailored to what interests you: mountains, beaches, hidden local spots, or the desert itself. Your guide is Khalid, who leads in English and knows the region as a local. Children from age 1 are welcome, and the vehicle handles the terrain. The pace is set by the stops themselves rather than a rigid schedule.
