The Experience

The drive out of Salalah surprises you — the landscape shifts fast, from the city edge into open scrub and then camel herds grazing like they own the road. Your guide picks you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned four-wheel drive, and within an hour you're standing in Wadi Dawkah, a UNESCO Heritage Site where around 1,200 frankincense trees grow in a natural garden that's been harvested for thousands of years. The guide walks you through how the resin is collected, the different grades, why Dhofari frankincense commands prices that made ancient traders rich. It's the kind of detail that sticks — you'll smell it again later and remember exactly where it comes from.

By afternoon you're in Thumrait, a Bedouin settlement that once sat on the Frankincense Trading Route, drinking traditional Arabic coffee with dates while your guide talks about the caravans that passed through. Then comes Shisr, surrounded by stories about Ubar — the legendary city mentioned in the Bible and the Koran, supposedly a crossroads where the Queen of Sheba herself bought frankincense. Archaeologists searched for it for decades before finding it here, buried under the sand. Your guide explains how it was discovered as you drive deeper into the Empty Quarter, the largest sand desert in the world, stretching across Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Yemen. After dark, the fire goes on and your guide cooks a traditional Omani barbecue while you smoke shisha and look up.
