Step-by-step itinerary
Explore desert and heritage sites

- Discover history of Frankincense
- Proceed to The Lost City of Ubar
- Explore archaeological museum at Ubar
- Travel through Rub al Khali desert
The experience
Wadi Dawka opens the tour as a working landscape, not a museum piece. The frankincense trees grow wild here in the largest concentration anywhere in the region, and the guide walks you through their history: how they were harvested for trade, what their resin was worth in ancient markets, and how frankincense is used today. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage designation, and the trees themselves are the artifact.
The Lost City of Ubar sits deeper in the desert, a settlement that thrived from around 2800 B.C. until it was swallowed by rising dunes around 300 A.D. Archaeologists using remote sensing equipment found the remains in 1992, and a small museum at the site displays what they uncovered. You walk the excavated foundations and see the scale of what was once an important frankincense trading hub before the desert reclaimed it.
The Rub al Khali, the Empty Quarter, dominates the landscape between these sites and fills the second half of the day. The arid plain stretches from the mountain foothills across an enormous sandy expanse, and the tour crosses it as part of the full route. A 4x4 vehicle is essential here, and it is included. Dinner is provided, and the guide travels with you throughout. The tour runs 20 hours total, so you are in the vehicle and at the sites for the full span.

Top questions
What are the frankincense trees at Wadi Dawka actually like when you get there?
Wadi Dawka holds the largest natural collection of frankincense trees in the region, and they grow wild across the site. The guide explains their history as a trade commodity and their modern uses. You walk among them and see the trees themselves, not a cultivated garden or a preserved grove behind barriers.
What does the museum at Ubar show?
The Lost City of Ubar has a small museum displaying archaeological discoveries from the excavation. The site itself (the buried settlement's remains) is what archaeologists found in 1992 using remote sensing. The museum holds the artifacts and context for what you see on the ground.
How much of the tour is spent driving through the Empty Quarter?
The Rub al Khali crossing is woven through the full 20-hour tour as you travel between Wadi Dawka and Ubar and across the vast sandy plain itself. Travel time is included in the tour duration, so the desert crossing is part of the route, not an add-on.
Is this tour only for people in very good shape?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. It is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with poor cardiovascular health, because the 4x4 vehicle travel and desert terrain present specific physical demands for those conditions.
Do I need to arrange my own way to the starting point?
Hotel pickup is included, so the tour collects you from your Salalah accommodation and returns you there at the end. You do not need to arrange transport to meet the group.
