Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Dhofar nature and heritage

  • Visit Taqah Castle governor's residence
  • Walk in Darbat valley and river
  • See ruins at Samharam UNESCO site

The experience

The route moves from the governor's residence at Taqah Castle (where you inspect traditional furnishings and the original setup of the rooms) into Darbat valley, where year-round greenery and the seasonal waterfalls of the escarpment frame the landscape. You walk down to the river itself, wade into the azure water, and photograph camel herds grazing along the flow. The valley opens onto the coast at Samharam, where the ruins of an ancient port city sit fortified above Khor Rori lagoon.

At Samharam, the museum traces the port's trade in frankincense and its role in the region's commerce. From the ruins you look down into the lagoon, an estuary where flocks of flamingoes, herons, spoonbills and other waders move through the shallows. The lagoon is where Darbat river meets the sea, and the bird life shifts with the seasons. Pickup is included from your hotel or meeting point in Salalah, and the guide handles the route and the stops.
