The experience

If you have a free afternoon in Salalah and want to see the region beyond the city center, this tour covers the east side in a single loop. You start at Koofan Heritage house, a 150-year-old Dhofari building that anchors the cultural part of the day. From there the route heads inland to Wadi Darbat, a natural park hidden in the mountains that overlooks Khor Rori. The wadi holds waterfalls dropping 30 meters, mountain lakes, caves, and enough camels grazing the slopes that you'll see them without looking for them. There's a picnic area if you want to sit and watch the landscape.

The second half moves to the coast and the archaeology. Khor Rori Creek is where the ruined city Sumhuram sits: the ancient frankincense and copper trade capital that UNESCO recognizes as part of the Land of Frankincense World Heritage Site. The museum and archaeological park let you walk the remains of the routes that moved goods across the Arabian Peninsula. On the way back, you stop at Taqah Castle, a 19th-century coastal fort with the kind of architecture and sightlines that show you how the town defended itself. The guide is with you the whole time, the vehicle is air-conditioned, and water is provided.
