  • Stop at Al Mughsail Beach blowholes
  • Photo stop at Mughsail lagoon

The experience

Taqah anchors the eastern half of the day: an old fishing village with a castle surrounded by watchtowers and stone houses. Inside, the rooms hold ancient jewelry, weapons, furniture and everyday pieces that map the region's history. From there, the route climbs into the mountains to reach Wadi Darbat, a natural park hidden in the highlands above Khor Rori. The Wadi holds waterfalls that drop 30 meters, a large population of camels, lakes, caves and vegetation that exists nowhere else in the region. During the monsoon season, mountain water feeds the falls. Year-round, the site is walkable and open.

The western half pivots to the coast. Al Mughsail Beach is built around a geological oddity: seawater rushes through underground channels with enough pressure to shoot out of the cliff face in a geyser-like spray that rises several meters high with each wave. A photo stop at the lagoon here often brings sightings of migratory birds. The day closes at Fizaya Beach, where turquoise water meets white sand along a hairpin bend road near Oman's western border: a place to sit and absorb the Indian Ocean before the return.

The vehicle is a 4WD air-conditioned van carrying a maximum of four passengers, which keeps the group small and allows access to the rough mountain terrain around Wadi Darbat. Walking over uneven and inclined ground is part of the day, so steady shoes are essential. Pickup is included from your hotel. The tour runs eight hours total.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is Taqah Castle like inside?

Taqah Castle holds rooms filled with ancient jewelry, weapons, furniture, paintings and everyday objects that show how people lived in this coastal fishing village. The castle itself is surrounded by watchtowers and stone houses, and entry is included in the tour.

Can I visit Wadi Darbat year-round, or only during monsoon season?

Wadi Darbat is open year-round. During the Khareef monsoon season, mountain water feeds waterfalls that drop 30 meters and creates cave chambers. Outside monsoon, the park still has its lakes, camels, caves and green vegetation, though the waterfalls are less dramatic.

What causes the water to shoot out at Al Mughsail Beach?

Seawater rushes through underground channels beneath Al Mughsail with high pressure from the sea current, then shoots out of the cliff face in a geyser-like eruption. The height of the spray rises and falls with the force of the waves.

How much walking is involved in this tour?

The day involves walking over rough and inclined ground, particularly around Wadi Darbat in the mountains. Comfortable, steady walking shoes are essential. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, and a moderate level of physical fitness helps.

Does the tour include hotel pickup?

Yes, pickup from your hotel is included. The 4WD van carries a maximum of four passengers per vehicle for safety. If you stay in Mirbat hotels, an additional transfer fee of USD 20 per person applies.
