The experience
The tour starts in the old fishing village of Taqah, where dried sardines have been made for generations in traditional Dhofari houses, then moves to Taqah Castle, the century-old former residence of the Wali (Governor). From there the route heads east to Sumharam, the ancient port city on the incense route that once connected the Mediterranean, Persian Gulf and India: now a UNESCO World Heritage site sitting above Khor Rori lagoon. The drive continues to Mirbat, the ancient capital of Dhofar, where mud-brick houses line the streets and the twin-domed Bin Ali Tomb stands as a photo stop.
The return journey westward takes you through the Qara mountains, where herds of camels and cattle move across the slopes, to the Tomb of Prophet Job in the green Salalah plains. Ayn Razat, a natural spring fed year-round by underground water and surrounded by lush mountains, offers a pause before the final stretch. The tour ends at Mughsail beach, where white sand meets deep blue water and waves crash through natural blow holes in the rocky cliffs at high tide. A short walk into the nearby valleys lets you stand among wild frankincense trees in their native habitat, and the return includes a photo stop at Mughsail lagoon, where migratory birds and occasional flamingos gather.
Private vehicle transport, an English-speaking driver-guide, bottled water and all national park fees are included. Hotel or port pickup and drop-off are arranged at booking. The pace is steady but not rushed. Most of the day is spent driving between sites rather than on foot, though the frankincense valley walk and beach exploration require comfortable shoes. Cruise ship passengers need to provide ship name, docking time, disembarkation time and re-boarding time when booking to ensure the return timing works.

Is this one for you?The eight-hour span means an early start and a full day in the vehicle, but it is the only way to see both the east coast castles and fishing villages and the western Frankincense trail, mountains and beach in one outing: trying to cover both halves separately would cost two days.

Top questions
What is Taqah Castle and why is it on this tour?
Taqah Castle was the official residence of the Wali (Governor) of the region and dates back a century. It sits in the old fishing village of Taqah and offers a glimpse into the region's history and traditional Dhofari architecture.
What are the blow holes at Mughsail and when can you see them?
The blow holes are natural openings in the rocky cliffs at Mughsail beach where waves burst through at high tide, creating a dramatic spray. They are best seen when the tide is high and the waves are strong enough to force water through the rock formations.
Is there a walk to see the frankincense trees, or do you just drive past them?
You take a short walk into the valleys near Mughsail to see the wild frankincense trees growing in their natural habitat among the dry, rocky countryside, and you get to smell the incense while taking in the scenic view of the region.
What is Sumharam and why was it important?
Sumharam, also called Khor Rori, was an ancient port city on the incense trade route connecting the Mediterranean, Persian Gulf and India. It was a major trading hub for frankincense shipping and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site overlooking the lagoon.
How much walking is involved on this tour?
Most of the day is spent in the private vehicle moving between sites. Walking is light: a short stroll through Mirbat's old streets, a walk into the frankincense valleys, and time on Mughsail beach. Comfortable shoes are recommended but no serious hiking is required.
If I'm arriving on a cruise ship, what information do I need to provide?
Cruise passengers must provide the ship name, docking time, disembarkation time and re-boarding time at the time of booking so the tour can be timed to get you back to the port in time.
