The experience
Four to five hours covers seven distinct stops across the East Salalah countryside, starting at Taqah Castle: the former governor's residence, now a museum displaying the region's history and traditional Dhofari mud houses. The tour passes by Taqah's sandy beach and fishing harbor, known for dried sardine production, then climbs to a 15-meter coastal cliff where you can watch for dolphins in the waters below and photograph the Indian Ocean.
Darbat Oasis is the centerpiece: a valley fed by an underground spring that forms a natural lake, ringed with seasonal waterfalls and local herds of camels, cattle and goats. From there, a 20-minute drive inland leads to Tawi Attair, a 211-meter-deep limestone sinkhole where hundreds of birds nest in the cliff walls: the echoes and calls carry up from the opening, which is why locals call it the "well of birds." The guide explains the karst geology and points out the viewpoint where the scale of the formation becomes clear.
The route then climbs Samhan mountain to see giant baobab trees, some reaching 25 meters tall with trunks 2 meters across: a rare habitat more commonly found in Africa. A 15-minute descent brings you to a gravity anomaly point, a stretch of road where a car in neutral appears to roll uphill, a natural phenomenon you experience firsthand. The final stop is Sumhuram, a UNESCO World Heritage site perched on a hill above the ocean. The information center screens a six-minute video framing the 5 BC settlement and its role in the ancient frankincense trade.
