The experience
Dahariz lagoon opens the evening: you arrive just before sunset to spot flocks of flamingoes, herons and other waders in the shallow water. From there you walk into al Baleed Archaeological Park, where the ruins of a medieval port city sit along the lagoon's edge. The Museum of the Frankincense Land's History and Maritime Halls sit within the park, tracing the trade routes that once made this coast wealthy. The light fades as you move through the site, and the monuments begin to glow.
The Al-Haffa incense market comes alive at night. Frankincense, perfumes, handicrafts and souvenirs fill the stalls, and the air shifts from the heat of the day to something cooler and more navigable. A photo stop at the beautifully lit palace clocktower, main gate and palace mosque's minaret breaks the walk. You then move to the gold and silver sellers' quarter, where jewellery, accessories, daggers and antiques line the displays: some for sale, some simply to admire. A stop in front of the Sultan Qaboos Mosque rounds out the monuments.
The tour ends in the plantations area, where you walk among farms, wells and irrigated fields. Local stalls serve fresh fruit (bananas, papaya, starfruit), and a complimentary coconut drink. Your guide speaks English, Arabic, Czech or Slovak, and hotel pickup is arranged before you book.
