The experience
The tour starts at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, where you'll see stained tiles and intricate artwork. The mosque is open 8:30 to 11 AM daily except Friday, so morning departures are built around that window. Dress code is enforced: women need a headscarf or hijab equivalent, and shorts and sleeveless tops aren't permitted for anyone. After the mosque, you move through the garden farms that supply the region (coconut, banana, papaya and vegetable plantations), before heading to Al Baleed.
Al Baleed is the centerpiece: a UNESCO World Heritage site that houses the Museum of the Frankincense Land. The museum documents the region's archaeological finds and maritime history, tracing the trade routes that made frankincense the region's lifeblood. From there, the tour takes you to Al Haffa Souq, where frankincense gum and incense are sold alongside gold and silver jewelry, textiles and traditional artifacts. The final stop is Al Husn Palace. Throughout the day, you travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a guide who speaks English, and bottled water is provided.
