The experience
Salalah's identity rests on frankincense, and this tour moves through the places that shaped that history. You start at the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, the largest in Dhofar Governorate, then head to the Frankincense Market (Haffa Souq), where the air fills with the scent of different grades of incense and you watch local women making traditional blends. The market also stocks perfumes, clothing and local goods. From there the tour reaches Al Baleed Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the ruins of the ancient port city of Dhofar still stand, including the remains of the Al Baleed Mosque, a massive structure supported by 144 columns. The Museum of the Land of Frankincense, located within the park, holds artifacts from across Dhofar Governorate and models of traditional Omani boats dating back 3000 years.
The route also takes in Al Hosn Palace, the Sultan's official residence (viewed from outside), and Al Haffa Beach, known for soft white sand and coconut palms. A stop at one of the fruit stalls in the lush plantations that ring Salalah lets you taste fresh coconut water: the region's unique microclimate, shaped by the Indian Ocean monsoon, supports bananas, coconuts and papayas despite the surrounding desert. You'll also pass through Salalah Gardens Mall if time allows, a modern shopping center mixing contemporary and traditional Arabic design.
Your guide speaks English and handles the route. Pickup from your hotel or location is included. The tour runs about four hours and comes with bottled water and snacks. Note that entrance fees to Al Baleed Archaeological Park and the Frankincense Land Museum are not included in the price.
