The experience
The tour starts in the city at the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, where you'll see the interior with its chandeliers, carpets and calligraphic details (modest clothing required). From there you move to Palace al Husn for photos of the main gate, clock tower and gardens, then into al-Haffa market where frankincense, perfumes, incense burners and traditional Omani dress are on sale. The route then passes through Salalah's vast coconut and banana plantations, where you can walk the irrigation systems and taste fresh fruit at local stalls or drink coconut water straight from the palm.
The countryside half takes you to Ayn Razat spring, where water gushes from rock formations surrounded by gardens, then into Darbat valley. There you wade into the Darbat river, photograph the seasonal waterfalls and limestone escarpment, and pose with the camel herds that graze year-round in the greenery. A short walk covers the valley floor. The water and the rock face are the main draws.
