The Experience

You arrive in Salalah with a free afternoon or morning, and the guide meets you at your hotel. The tour opens at the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, an Islamic architecture landmark at the heart of the city with two minarets, a dome, hand-woven carpets and a grand chandelier inside; the prayer hall is open only between 8am and 11am, so timing matters. Women must cover their hair and all visitors dress modestly — the guide will explain what that means for each stop. The flowered garden surrounding the mosque is part of the visit.

From there the route moves to the Salalah Central Market, established in 1979, where you walk through stalls of local spices, textiles, frankincense, incense, Omani daggers and handcrafted jewelry. The market also has outdoor grilled fish and seafood if you want to eat. Next is Al Hafah Souq, three kilometres from the city center and ringed by coconut trees — this is where the best frankincense in the Sultanate is sold, along with traditional gold and silver jewelry and textiles. A short stop follows for Omani halwa (a gelatinous sweet flavored with rosewater, saffron or dried fruits) served with Arabian coffee, a traditional way to mark a pause in the day.

The Al Baleed Archaeological Site is the anchor of the afternoon. This was the most important ancient port on the Arabian Sea and part of the frankincense trade route; its prosperity dates to the Iron Age, and UNESCO registered it as a World Heritage Site in 2000. The site combines open-air ruins and the Museum of Frankincense Lands, which has two galleries — one on Dhofar's archaeological heritage and one on the maritime history of Oman. The Al Baleed Fort ruins stand 13 metres high with three circular corner towers and a large courtyard in the middle. After the museum and ruins, the tour stops at Khor Dahariz, a lagoon at the eastern edge of Salalah where migratory birds like ibis, flamingo, grey heron and white heron gather, and then drives 23 kilometres to the Attin viewpoint on a mountain overlooking the city. A short walk from the viewpoint takes you to a cave; the guide explains its geological formation and the plantations around it.
