The experience

Fazayah Beach sits about 80 km west of Salalah, and getting there is half the point. The drive climbs past Al Mughsail Beach toward the hairpin curves on the flanks of Wadi Afawl, then up to the heights of Jebel Qamar, where the view opens to the Indian Ocean horizon and the steep rocky cliffs drop away below. A path leads down to small and large sandy beaches where you can swim in the waves. The whole route passes through landscape most visitors to Salalah never see.

Al Mughsail is the second major stop, a sand beach lined with gazebos and palms where the mountains rise directly from the shore. Just beyond it are the blowholes: water forces through the rock and shoots up to 28 m high during peak season and high tide, though the phenomenon shows year-round at high tide. Between the beach and the blowholes lies a lagoon that draws migrating birds between Africa, Europe and Asia. The final stop west is Masood Beach, a white sand beach tucked into the mountains so tightly some call it the hidden beach.

The return to Salalah passes frankincense trees and offers chances to spot camels and other animals of Dhofar. Your guide speaks English or Arabic and can answer questions and adjust the itinerary to your interests. Lunch is a traditional Omani meal. Bottled water, soda and coffee or tea come throughout the day. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and pickup from your hotel is included.
