Explore East Salalah natural and historic sites
- Visit Koofan Heritage Lodge and Taqah Castle
- Stop at Taqah View Point
- Explore Wadi Darbat natural park
- Visit Jabal Shamhan
- See Gravity Hill
The experience
You start at Ain Razat, a collection of natural springs in the Dhofar region, then move to Koofan Heritage House to see a 150-year-old Dhofari building. The route then climbs into the mountains toward Wadi Darbat, a natural park hidden in the highlands above the Taqah coast. The Wadi holds waterfalls that drop 30 meters from the rock face, cave chambers carved into the mountainside, lakes, and herds of camels grazing across the landscape. During the Khareef monsoon season, water rushes down from the peaks and fills the park with moving water. Outside that season, the waterfalls recede but the rock formations and vegetation remain. A picnic area sits within the park if you want to stop and sit.
From Wadi Darbat, the tour continues to Khor Rori Creek and the ruins of Sumhuram, an ancient city that was the center of the Arabian frankincense trade. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage designation called the Land of Frankincense. The guide leads you through the archaeological park and the small museum there. The tour also passes Gravity Hill and Jabal Shamhan, viewpoints that frame the landscape. An air-conditioned vehicle carries you between stops, and your guide speaks English throughout the day. Bottled water is included.
Hotel pickup is included, so you do not arrange transport from your accommodation. The whole route takes four hours. You choose which of the heritage sites (Koofan Heritage House, Taqah Castle, or Borgel Asker). You want to visit, so the guide can adjust the stops to your interests.
