Summary

Colorful villages cliffs and secret grottos by traditional boat

You’ll step onto a traditional Amalfi Coast gozzo boat with a small group, cruise past dramatic cliffs and ancient watchtowers from Amalfi or Positano, swim or snorkel in hidden grottos, enjoy fresh fruit and drinks on board (prosecco included), and share laughs with locals as you drift along one of Italy’s most colorful coastlines.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the wood under my bare feet — warm from the sun, a little rough in places. We’d just pushed off from Amalfi (or maybe it was Positano for some folks; our group was a mix), and the boat — this old-style gozzo, all curves and polished edges — felt like it belonged to the sea more than to us. Salvatore, our captain, nodded at the watchtowers clinging to the cliffs as if they were old friends. Someone handed me a slice of peach that tasted like it had never seen a supermarket.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much with strangers. The water near Conca dei Marini looked painted on — blue so clear you could see pebbles thirty feet down. We stopped by the Runghetiello Grotto, which is smaller than you’d think but somehow magical when you swim inside (the echo of your own splash bounces back at you). Snorkeling gear was just there in a basket — no fuss. I tried Limoncello for the first time after climbing back on board and nearly coughed; Salvatore grinned and poured me prosecco instead.

We drifted past Praiano and that wild Furore Fjord where the cliffs squeeze together like they’re keeping secrets. There’s this moment when everyone goes quiet — just wind and water and the faintest smell of salt. Later, we stopped at La Porta beach, only reachable by boat. I floated on my back for ages while others explored the rocks or sat on towels eating more fruit. The sun kept shifting on Positano’s houses until they looked almost unreal — like someone had thrown confetti up the hillside.

I still think about that feeling of being out there — not rushed, not crowded, just part of whatever rhythm the coast wanted that day. It’s hard to say what stuck with me most: maybe Sophia Loren’s villa glimpsed through spray, maybe just how easy it felt to let go for an afternoon.
