The experience
How do you actually see Capri without fighting the crowds at the dock? By boat, with someone who knows where the tour groups don't go. Giovanni drives a private boat from Amalfi, and the day moves through the water instead of through queues. You start by swimming at Li Galli, the island off Positano, before the boat heads to Capri's sea side. The route takes in the Red Grotto, the White Grotto with its pale tuff walls, and the Green Grotto, where the water throws an emerald light across the cave. The Faraglioni (three massive rocks that rise from the sea) are the landmark everyone photographs, and passing between them by boat is a different experience than seeing them from shore.
The Blue Grotto is Capri's most famous site, and the entry fee (18 euros per person) is separate from the tour price. If you choose to go in, you lie flat on the bottom of a small rowing boat while it slides under the entrance arch, and then you're floating in the dark on water so blue it looks transparent. The boat carries snorkeling gear, so you can swim in the clearer water away from the main sites. Lunch stops at Nerano, a fishing village on the Amalfi Coast known for its restaurants, or at a quieter cove depending on the day's conditions.
The boat is stocked with water, Coca-Cola, beer, Spritz, limoncello and fresh fruit throughout the day. You'll need to bring your own sunscreen. Giovanni speaks English, Spanish and Italian, and the whole day runs six to seven hours on the water.
