The Experience
We stepped onto the little boat in Amalfi just as the sky started shifting — not quite evening yet, but that soft light you only get here. Our captain, Antonio, greeted us with this huge grin and a “pronti?” before untangling the ropes. I could smell the sea right away — not salty exactly, more like wet stone and lemon peels from somewhere up the hill. The engine was low and steady as we drifted past Santacroce. Antonio pointed out this natural arch he called “the arc of lovers,” then joked it looked like two elephants kissing. I still can’t decide which I saw first.
We cruised by Sophia Loren’s villa (he slowed down for a second — I think everyone does), then into Conca dei Marini’s bay. There’s this cave up above, something about devils and Saracen pirates — Antonio told stories in a mix of English and Italian, waving his hands around so much he nearly dropped his phone overboard. The villas along here are wild — Moet Chandon’s place, some senator’s house where Jackie Kennedy once stayed. It all felt slightly unreal but also very… lived-in? Like people actually sit on those terraces at dusk.
The air cooled off as we reached Furore Fjord. The cliffs squeeze in tight here — there’s a tiny fishing village tucked right under the bridge (Antonio said it only gets sun for two hours a day; I tried to imagine that). He mentioned Red Bull runs cliff-diving competitions off that bridge, which sounded completely mad to me. We didn’t see any divers — just one old man fixing nets on shore who waved back when I waved first.
By Praiano, the sun was dropping fast and everything turned gold-pink except for Positano in the distance, which somehow stayed blue. Antonio popped open a bottle of prosecco (he called it “pre-dinner courage”) and handed us glasses while steering with his elbow. We clinked them together as Li tried to pronounce “Li Galli” in Italian — she got it wrong twice and Antonio laughed so hard he nearly missed our turn back toward Amalfi. Sometimes I still think about that light on her face right then.
