The experience
You board an elegant speedboat at the historic port of your choice (Amalfi or Positano) as the light begins to shift toward evening. A brief safety briefing gets you settled, then the crew casts off and the coastline opens up. Within minutes, you're approaching the Lovers' Arch, a natural rock formation carved into the cliffs where, according to local legend, two young lovers once sheltered. Sailors say passing beneath it brings good fortune. The boat glides close enough to see the detail of the stone and the water beneath it.
The route follows the dramatic edge of the coast: Conca dei Marini appears next, a village perched on the cliffside with the white dome of San Pancrazio Church visible from the water, surrounded by Saracen watchtowers and fishermen's houses clinging to the rocks. Then comes the Fiordo di Furore, Italy's only fjord, where a narrow gorge opens to a tiny beach framed by towering cliffs and a stone bridge arching overhead. The kind of landscape that has drawn film crews for decades. The boat slows and you take in the scale of it from the water, where the perspective is entirely different from any viewpoint on land.
At Praiano, you stop to swim and snorkel in turquoise water near Cala della Gavitella, one of the few beaches on the coast that holds sunlight until sunset. Snorkeling equipment and swimming noodles are aboard. A shower lets you rinse off afterward. As you float in the Mediterranean, the medieval Torre a Mare watchtower stands on the cliff above, and the Marina di Praia (a small cove that was once a fishing harbor), sits nearby. The crew serves prosecco, beer, soft drinks, limoncello and snacks throughout the afternoon.
The final stretch takes you toward Positano as the sky turns pink and gold. The village appears as a cascade of pastel houses tumbling down steep cliffs to the sea, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta with its ceramic dome catching the last light, and small colored boats floating in the bay. You raise a glass of prosecco on deck with Positano as your backdrop, the moment most people come for, then the boat turns back toward your departure port, arriving as dusk settles.
