The experience

The boat leaves from Sorrento area, but the day starts in Amalfi town itself. A driver picks you up near Piazza Flavio Gioia and takes you to the port, about 90 minutes each way. It sounds like a lot of transfer time, but it means you don't have to figure out how to get there yourself, and the minivan ride gives you a first look at the coast before you're even on the water. Once you're aboard the semi-private boat, which holds a maximum of 12 people, the real thing begins: you sail past Cala di Mitigliano and Punta Campanella (that rocky point with an old watchtower still standing), and then Capri appears.

The boat takes you past the famous Faraglioni, those three rock peaks that rise out of the sea like they were placed there on purpose. You can eat, wander the narrow streets, sit in a café, or walk up to Marina Piccola if you want another swim in a quieter spot. The boat doesn't rush you. It waits. On the way back to Amalfi, you're given snacks and soft drinks (water, beer, Prosecco, even a limoncello tasting), which is a nice touch after a day on the water. The driver meets you at the port and takes you back to where you started, dropping you at Flavio Gioia Square by late afternoon.

One thing to know: the Blue Grotto isn't included because the waiting times are brutal. If you really want it, you can do it on your own during your free time on the island, but most people skip it and spend those hours eating or sitting in the square instead.
