The Experience

We were already slipping away from Marina di Praia before I’d even fully realized it — the engine humming low, salt in the air, our captain Antonio whistling some old tune I didn’t recognize. The cliffs above Praiano looked almost too steep to hold those pastel houses. There was this sharp smell of seaweed and sunscreen mixing together, and I remember thinking, “Alright, this is really happening.” We passed Conca dei Marini so close you could see laundry flapping on someone’s tiny balcony.

I tried to ask Antonio about Furore in my best Italian (he grinned and switched to English immediately — fair enough). He pointed out the fjord there, said it’s one of the most photographed spots but still feels secret when you’re down by the water. We stopped for a swim near Tordigliano beach — only reachable by boat or if you’re feeling heroic about stairs. The water was cold at first but then just right. My friend lost her hair tie and we spent five minutes laughing as it floated away like a jellyfish. That kind of thing sticks with you more than any postcard view.

Later we pulled up to a family-run restaurant right on the rocks — no menu, just whatever fish they caught that morning. I’m still not sure what exactly I ate (Antonio called it “pezzogna,” which I probably mispronounced), but it tasted like lemon and olive oil and sun. After lunch we wandered through Amalfi town for an hour; I watched a wedding spill out of the cathedral steps while kids chased pigeons. The paper shop smelled like ink and old wood — I bought a notebook for reasons I can’t explain.

The last swim was in this tiny lagoon near Marmorata with a waterfall pouring into blue-green water. Nobody spoke for a bit — just the sound of water hitting rock and someone far off singing in Italian. It’s weird how quiet things can get out there, even with all those famous towns so close by. On the way back, Antonio let us pop open some Prosecco he’d stashed under the seat. That view of Minori sliding past in late afternoon light...I don’t know, it’s hard to shake.
