The experience

Paddling out from Maiori, I could feel the salt on my lips before we’d even rounded the old Norman Tower. Our guide, Antonio, waved us closer so he could tell us about Saracen pirates. Pandora’s Cave looked smaller than I expected but felt huge once inside, with light flickering off the ceiling. We took turns going in so it felt safe: Antonio was careful about that. Afterward we stopped at Dead Horse Beach (the name is darker than the place itself). There was time to snorkel: water cold enough to make me gasp but worth it for those flashes of fish under the rocks. We sat on warm pebbles eating fresh fruit and little snacks while someone passed around an action camera for silly photos. Sun on my face, salt in my hair. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
