The experience

Amber Fort sits on the edge of Jaipur, a 16th-century stronghold of the Rajput rulers that once served as the capital before the city itself was built. Your driver collects you from your hotel and the guide walks you through the fort's courtyards, the Sheesh Mahal (mirror palace) and the views across Maota Lake and the local markets below. From there the car takes you to Panna Meena Stepwell, a 16th-century water reservoir with symmetrical staircases and carved walls that few tourists find, then to Jal Mahal: a palace floating in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, enlarged in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II.

The afternoon brings you into Jaipur city proper. Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, is the pink five-story latticed structure Sawai Pratap Singh built so the royal household could watch street life without being seen. You'll stand in front of it and the guide will explain the 953 small windows and the architecture that made it possible. Jantar Mantar, completed in 1734, is a collection of nineteen astronomical instruments built by the same Maharaja Jai Singh II: brass and stone structures designed to measure time and track the stars. City Palace, established when Jaipur was founded in 1727, still houses the royal family and remains partly open to visitors. The guide takes you through the courtyards and the museum. Royal Gaitor Tombs, set against the Aravalli Hills, holds the cenotaphs of Jaipur's Maharajas carved in marble and sandstone.

The car is air-conditioned and waits for you at each stop. A moderate amount of walking is involved. Wear comfortable shoes and dress in smart casual (short shorts and sleeveless tops are not recommended in the temples). The tour runs eight hours total. You can add shopping time in the afternoon if the guide and driver have covered the main sites and you want to browse the local markets, or you can ask to spend longer at any single stop. The private arrangement means the day follows your interests, not a fixed itinerary.
