The experience

Pickup happens around 8am from your hotel or airport. The driver takes you first to Amber Fort, 11 kilometres outside the city on a hilltop: the main draw for most visitors to Jaipur. After that stop, you break for lunch at an air-conditioned restaurant where you can rest before the afternoon sites. The car is private, so the pace stays yours and the driver waits when you need time.

The afternoon moves through the city's central landmarks. Jal Mahal, the Water Palace, sits in the middle of a lake. Entrance is not allowed, but it's a stop for photographs. City Palace was built in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II and served as the seat of the Maharaja until 1949: parts of it remain a royal residence. Jantar Mantar, completed in 1734, holds nineteen astronomical instruments built in stone and marble, including the world's largest stone sundial. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and sits near City Palace. Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, is a five-storey red and pink sandstone structure from 1799 designed for the royal women's chambers: entrance is not permitted, but the exterior is a major photo stop. The tour also includes a visit to the royal cenotaphs (chhatris) nestled in the Aravalli hills, where the Kachwaha Rajput rulers were cremated, with intricate marble and sandstone carvings honoring different maharajas. Patrika Gate at Jawahar Circle, one of Asia's largest circular parks, closes the day with hand-painted murals of Rajasthan's culture and history.
