The experience

Your driver picks you up at your hotel at 8:30 AM and the tour runs for 8 hours. The route takes you through Jaipur's major landmarks: Amer Fort, built in 1592 from red sandstone and marble on the outskirts; Jal Mahal, the five-story water palace in the middle of Man Sagar Lake; Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds with its distinctive latticed windows; Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory with the world's largest stone sundial and a UNESCO World Heritage site; and City Palace, still partly home to the royal family. You'll also stop at Royal Gaitor, the tombs of several maharajas, and Panna Meena ka Kund, a square-shaped stepwell with stairs on all four sides.

The tour ends at the old Pink City markets, where you can browse gemstones, silver jewelry, bangles, blue pottery, pashmina, carpets and textiles. All sightseeing and transfers happen by private air-conditioned car. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of two other languages depending on which option you book. Bottled water is provided, and fuel, parking and taxes are covered.

A moderate amount of walking happens at each stop. Wear comfortable shoes and dress in smart casual (short shorts and sleeveless tops are not recommended in temples). Children must be accompanied by an adult, and you'll need a valid passport on the day of travel.
