The experience

The day starts at 8:30 AM when your driver picks you up from your hotel and heads into Jaipur's grid of pink-painted streets. Jantar Mantar comes first: a UNESCO World Heritage site built by Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh, holding nineteen astronomical instruments and the world's largest stone sundial. From there, the tuk-tuk takes you to Hawa Mahal, the five-story Palace of Winds with its distinctive latticework screens, built so the royal household could watch city life without being seen. The route then passes Jal Mahal, the five-storied water palace sitting in Man Sagar Lake, renovated in the 18th century and built from red sandstone.

City Palace and Royal Gaitor fill the middle of the day. City Palace, still partly home to the royal family, sits at the heart of the city Maharaja Jai Singh designed around astronomical principles. Royal Gaitor, the royal cenotaphs outside the city walls beneath Nahargarh, is quieter and less visited than the main landmarks.
