The experience

Your driver picks you up from your hotel at a time you choose and takes you straight to Amber Fort, the UNESCO-listed Rajput palace and fort complex perched on a hill 11 kilometres from the city. The fort's red sandstone and intricate architecture anchor the morning, and the hilltop views frame the valley below. From there the route moves to Panna Meena Stepwell, an 8-storey symmetrical well cut into the earth and still full of water year-round: the geometric pattern of its descending levels makes it one of Jaipur's most photographed sites.

Next is Jal Mahal, the Water Palace that sits in the middle of Man Sagar Lake and appears to float on the water. The palace showcases Rajput architectural detail at a smaller scale than Amber Fort, and the lake setting gives the stop a different character. The tour closes at Royal Gaitor, the tombs of past Maharajas at the city's edge, where marble carvings and cenotaphs mark the final resting places of Jaipur's rulers. This is the quieter stop, less crowded than the fort.

Transport is private (just you and your guide in an air-conditioned car), so the pace stays yours and the stops don't rush.
