The Experience

The day starts before the city wakes. You arrive at Badi Chopad flower market while vendors are still arranging marigolds, roses and jasmine — the colors and smell fill the narrow lanes, and the light is sharp for photographs. Amer Town, eleven kilometers from the city center, holds the 16th-century Amber Fort on a hilltop with Rajput architecture and the Sheesh Mahal inside. Panna Meena Stepwell, an 8th-century structure in the same town, descends in symmetrical staircases — it was built for water storage and social gatherings, and the engineering is still striking.
