The experience

The driver picks you up at 9 a.m. from your hotel or airport and heads straight to Hawa Mahal, the palace of winds built in 1799 with its distinctive latticed pink facade. From there the route moves through City Palace, where Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh's original design still stands with its courtyards and gardens, then to Jantar Mantar: a collection of nineteen astronomical instruments completed in 1738 that includes the world's largest stone sundial and carries UNESCO World Heritage status. The car takes you out to Amer Fort on the rugged hills outside town, where red sandstone and white marble blend Hindu and Muslim architecture. The Sheesh Mahal inside is known for its mirror work.

The second half of the day loops back through Royal Gaitor, the tomb complex for several maharajas nestled beneath Nahargarh Fort, then to Jal Mahal: a five-story water palace in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, rebuilt in the 18th century in red sandstone. Panna Meena Ka Kund, a stepwell, rounds out the major stops. The local market is optional and can be added if time allows. Throughout the eight hours, the driver stays with the car. You decide how long to spend at each site within the day's frame.
