The experience

Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, opens the day. Built by Sawai Pratap Singh, its five stories of curved arches and intricate jali latticework screens were designed so the royal family could watch the city's daily life without being seen. From there, the route moves to City Palace, an 18th-century blend of Rajput, Mughal and European architecture that still serves as a royal residence. The palace complex spreads across courtyards, gardens and museums holding royal artifacts and the city's history.

Jantar Mantar comes next: a UNESCO World Heritage site and the world's largest stone astronomical observatory. Sawai Jai Singh built nineteen architectural instruments here, including the largest stone sundial on earth, each one still functional for tracking celestial movements. The stop at Royal Gaitor shifts to a quieter register: a cemetery of chhatris, or cenotaphs, for past Maharajas, each one carved with intricate detail on pillars and arches. Photographers often linger here.

Jal Mahal, the Water Palace, floats in Man Sagar Lake with four levels submerged and one above the surface: a five-story example of Rajput architecture that Maharaja Jai Singh II expanded in the 18th century. The tour includes Amer, eleven kilometers from the city center, where Amer Fort and a historic stepwell from the 16th century sit in the shadow of the fort. If time allows, the driver takes you to a block print factory where artisans demonstrate the hand-printing process on fabric. The car is air-conditioned throughout, and bottled water is provided.
