The Experience

“You see that?” our guide Ajay grinned as we craned our necks up at Amer Fort — sunlight bouncing off the sandstone so bright I had to squint. The climb was steeper than I expected, but somehow the chatter from other visitors (and the smell of incense drifting from a tiny shrine) kept me going. Inside, Ajay pointed out faded frescoes and told stories about queens who watched festivals from those latticed windows. I touched the cold stone wall — it felt older than anything I’d ever seen.

We wandered down to Panna Meena ka Kund after that. The steps looked like some kind of puzzle — all angles and shadows — and kids were running up and down them while their mothers called out in Hindi. Ajay explained how people used to gather here for water and gossip. I tried to imagine the place full of voices echoing off the walls, but mostly I just heard my own footsteps on the stone.

They let me try it — my pattern came out crooked but everyone laughed, even me. There was this earthy smell from wet dye and old wood shavings that stuck to my shirt cuffs for hours after. Later at Masala Chowk, we sat outside with chai and samosas while Ajay teased me about my “unique” art skills. The air tasted like cardamom and fried onions and something sweet I couldn’t name.
