The experience

Your driver picks you up from your hotel, airport or railway station and takes you first to Amer, a hilltop town built around a 16th-century fort and palace commissioned by Raja Man Singh I. The fort's courtyards, intricate stonework and views over Jaipur city draw thousands of visitors each year. On the way down, you stop at Panna Meena Ka Kund, a stepwell built in the 16th century with eight stories and 1,800 symmetrical steps descending 200 feet: originally designed as a water reservoir and gathering place, it stands as a record of ancient Indian craftsmanship.

The route then moves to Jal Mahal, a five-story red sandstone palace rising from the middle of Man Sagar Lake. Enlarged in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II, it represents Rajput architecture at its most distinctive. From there you reach Hawa Mahal, Jaipur's most recognizable landmark: a seven-story structure of curved arches and latticework screens built by Sawai Pratap Singh so the royal household could observe city life unseen. The City Palace, still partly home to the royal family, sits at the heart of Jaipur's grid. The city itself was designed by Maharaja Jai Singh, who was also an astronomer. Jantar Mantar, his open-air astronomical observatory, holds nineteen stone instruments including the world's largest stone sundial. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest stone astronomical observatory in existence.

After the monuments, you visit Jaipur's block printing quarter, where artisans work with hand-carved wooden blocks and Persian-influenced designs that trace back to the Mughal era. You watch the process of applying intricate patterns to fabric and can join a hands-on demonstration if you choose. The day ends at Masala Chowk, where you can buy masala chai and local snacks while sitting in the market's everyday rhythm.
