The experience

The day starts at Amer Town, the historic settlement that was once the capital of the Kachwaha Rajputs, then moves to Panna Meena Stepwell near Amber Fort: a 16th-century water reservoir with symmetrical staircases and intricate carvings that still stands as a peaceful, picturesque site. From there you head to Jal Mahal, the five-story red sandstone water palace built in the middle of Man Sagar Lake and enlarged in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II. The palace sits on the water itself, so you see it from the shore rather than entering it.

Next comes Royal Gaitor, where the cenotaphs of Jaipur's Maharajas are carved in marble and sandstone against the Aravalli Hills backdrop. Then you reach Hawa Mahal, the red and pink sandstone palace built in 1799 that sits on the edge of City Palace and extends into the women's chambers. It's the structure most visitors recognize from photographs. City Palace itself follows, with its separated gardens and courtyards spread across a large area. The tour ends at Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage site that holds the world's largest stone sundial and still functions as an astronomical observatory today.
