The experience

Your driver picks you up from your hotel in the morning and takes you straight to the Rajput Fort on the city's outskirts, where red sandstone and white marble blend in Hindu and Muslim architecture. The Sheesh Mahal, the Mirror Palace, sits inside, famous for its mirror craftsmanship. From there you move through the morning stops: Panna Meena ka Kund, a square stepwell with stairs on all four sides, and Royal Gaitor, the tomb complex for maharajas including Jai Singh II, tucked beneath Nahargarh Fort in a cove between desert foothills.

By midday you reach Jal Mahal, the five-story water palace built in red sandstone in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, renovated in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II. Then comes Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds built in 1799: the pink latticed facade with its curved arches and jali screens is Jaipur's most recognizable landmark. Jantar Mantar follows: nineteen astronomical instruments completed in 1738, including the world's largest stone sundial, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The day ends at City Palace, the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, a complex of courtyards, gardens and structures designed by Jai Singh himself. You move through each at your own pace. The driver waits and the car stays air-conditioned between stops.

The tour runs eight hours total. If you choose the guide-and-tickets option at checkout, an English-speaking expert walks you through the history of each site and handles monument entry. If you book the car-and-driver option alone, you navigate the exteriors and grounds independently. Either way, the driver manages parking and fuel, and you can ask to detour to Johri Bazar or Bapu Bazar for shopping if the day allows.
