The Experience

Your driver picks you up from your hotel, airport or railway station and heads 11 kilometers north to Amer, where the tour begins in the historic town that gave Jaipur its royal heritage. You'll walk through narrow streets to Panna Meena Kund, an ancient step well with a geometric design that descends into the earth—a quiet architectural marvel tucked away from the main roads. From there, the route takes you to Jal Mahal, the Water Palace sitting in the center of Man Sagar Lake, a 18th-century structure that Maharaja Jai Singh II enlarged and renovated.

Back in the city, you move through Jaipur's walled Pink City to see Hawa Mahal—the Palace of Winds—a five-story structure built in 1799 with 953 small windows carved into pink and red sandstone. Your guide explains why Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh built it this way: the windows let royal women observe street life without being seen. Next is Jantar Mantar, an 18th-century astronomical observation site where enormous masonry instruments track constellations and stars; the giant sun-dial still keeps accurate time with daily corrections. You'll also visit City Palace, which remains the home of the Jaipur royal family and now houses the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, and Royal Gaitor, the cenotaphs of Rajasthan's rulers located 15 kilometers outside the city walls.

When you book with a guide, your guide purchases all monument entry tickets at each stop, so you walk past the queues at the doors. The tour ends at a block printing workshop where you watch artisans use carved wooden blocks to stamp patterns onto fabric, then try it yourself and create one print to take with you.
