The experience

The car picks you up at your hotel at 9 a.m. and heads straight to Hawa Mahal, the five-story Palace of Winds built in 1799 with hundreds of small latticed windows carved into red sandstone. From there you move to Amber Fort, eleven kilometers outside the city, where you spend two hours walking the ramparts and courtyards of the fort that ruled Jaipur for centuries. The guide explains the Rajput and Mughal architecture as you go, and the vantage points give you the best photographs of the valley below.

After Amber Fort comes Jantar Mantar, the largest stone astronomical observatory in the world, where the maharaja's astronomers mapped the sky using instruments built into the stone itself. Then City Palace, where the royal family still lives in part of the complex: the courtyards, gardens and carved structures show how the city's founder, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, designed the whole place around geometric principles. You'll see Jal Mahal, the five-story water palace floating in Man Sagar Lake, and stop at Panna Meena Stepwell, a 200-meter-deep well with carved stone steps descending into the earth. The day ends at Gaitor Ki Chhatriyan, the royal crematorium with cenotaphs of the maharajas, set against the Aravalli Hills.
