The experience

The day starts at your hotel with pickup in a private air-conditioned vehicle, then heads to Amber Fort on the outskirts of Jaipur. From there the route moves through the city itself. Jal Mahal appears first: a palace floating in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, rebuilt in the 18th century and framed by the Nahargarh hills behind it. Then comes Hawa Mahal, the five-story Palace of Winds built in 1799 with 953 small latticed windows designed so royal women could watch street life without being seen. The lattice also channels cool air through the structure, a practical detail that kept the palace bearable in summer heat. Jantar Mantar sits nearby, a collection of nineteen stone astronomical instruments completed in 1734 and still standing as a UNESCO World Heritage site. City Palace comes next: the royal residence established when Jai Singh II moved his court from Amber, still home to the Jaipur royal family and housing a museum of the kingdom's history.
