The experience

Amer Fort dominates the morning. Perched high on a hill, it's the principal tourist draw in Jaipur, and your guide walks you through its artistic elements: the large ramparts, series of gates, and the Shila Dev temple near the Ganesh Gate. The palace itself blends Rajput and Mughal architecture and was once the residence of the Rajput Maharajas. After the crowds, a cool kund (stepwell) hidden in the north end of the Amer area offers a quiet place to sit during the heat of the afternoon.

The afternoon moves through the city's most photographed landmarks. Jal Mahal floats in the middle of Man Sagar Lake: an ancient duck-hunting palace now off-limits to visitors but perfect for photos from the shore. City Palace, built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1727 when he moved his court from Amber, shows the grandeur of royal Jaipur life through its architecture. Jantar Mantar, an astrological observatory, displays ancient scientific instruments for studying astronomy, not a typical monument but a working example of 18th-century science.

Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, gets its name from the design that lets cool breezes circulate through the building. Built from red and pink sandstone on the edge of City Palace, it's one of Jaipur's most recognizable structures.
