The experience

Your pickup happens between 8am and noon from anywhere in Jaipur, and the route moves through the city center in a private air-conditioned car with a uniformed driver. The tour opens at Patrika Gate, the ornate red sandstone entrance to Jawahar Circle, popular for photographs before the crowds arrive. From there you move to Albert Hall Museum, then to Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, where you stand in front of the five-story structure of small windows built into the City Palace's edge. The pink sandstone facade is what draws most visitors, but the building itself was designed so the royal women could watch street life below without being seen.

City Palace comes next, and you walk through its beautiful gateways. The palace has been the ceremonial and administrative seat of Jaipur's rulers since Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II moved his court here in 1727. Parts of it remain a royal residence. The final stop is Jantar Mantar, the astronomical observation site completed in 1734 and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. It holds nineteen instruments built from stone and marble, and the centerpiece is the world's largest stone sundial: tall enough that its shadow marks the time across the ground below. Your guide explains what each instrument measured and why Jai Singh II built them.
