The experience

The morning starts with pickup from your Muscat hotel and a drive inland to Nizwa, Oman's former capital during the Al Yaruba Dynasty. The Nizwa Souk sprawls through old market halls where vendors sell pottery, jewelry, spices, Omani sweets, dates and handicrafts in an authentic setting that few places preserve. If you book a Friday departure and request it at checkout, the tour can start at 6:00 AM to catch the cattle market, when locals bring goats, sheep and cattle to sell in a circus-style open-air gathering.

Next to the souk stands Nizwa Fort, built in 1649 as a military stronghold for the Yaruba dynasty. The fort is now a museum with passages, rooms and defensive traps laid along the corridors. You walk through the structure and climb to views across the ancient town and surrounding mountains. From there, the guide drives you toward Jabal Shams, the mountain that rises to 3,009 meters and earns its nickname as the Grand Canyon of Oman. The road is off-road and steep. You stop at the canyon viewpoint at 2,000 meters to photograph Wadi Ghul and take in the landscape before the return drive to Muscat.

The route also passes through Al Hamra, a 400-year-old town built around ruins estimated to be 700 to 1,000 years old and left untouched, and Misfat Al Abriyeen, a mountain village perched at 1,000 meters on the foothills. Your guide is English-speaking and the vehicle is private, so the pace and stops are yours alone. Bottled water is included. Bring sunscreen and wear layers, as the altitude and exposure shift through the day.

What’s included

  • Private transportation in a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
