The experience

You start in Muscat and drive south through the Hajar Mountains toward Nizwa, an ancient trade-route city on a plain of seasonal rivers and palm plantations. The morning takes you to Nizwa Fort, a 17th-century stronghold with a massive cylindrical tower built by Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya'rubi in the 1650s, though the structure beneath it reaches back to the 12th century. The fort sits above an underground stream and served as the administrative seat for Imams and Walis through Oman's turbulent history, a formidable defense against raiding forces drawn to Nizwa's wealth and strategic position. You walk through the fort, then step into the Nizwa Souk, a marketplace in the fort's shadow where silversmiths work in small shops and handicraft stalls line the covered passages.

From Nizwa, the route climbs into the mountains toward Jebel Shams, "Sun Mountain", the highest peak in the Hajar range and the first place in Oman to catch sunrise.
