The experience
The day starts with a drive to Nizwa, Oman's old capital, where the Nizwa Souq opens at 5 a.m. and runs until about 10 a.m. The market sprawls across authentic old halls where vendors sell fish, meat, vegetables, pottery, jewelry, handicrafts, and souvenirs, and on Fridays, a cattle market brings locals from nearby villages to trade donkeys, goats, cattle, sheep, and chickens in an open-air circus-style setting. Your guide navigates you through the stalls at whatever pace suits you, stopping where the goods or the crowd catches your eye.
Next to the souq stands Nizwa Fort, a 17th-century fortress built by the Yaruba dynasty as a military stronghold. The fort is now a museum where you walk through rooms, passages, and towers: many of them fitted with traps designed to stop intruders who breached the outer defenses. The structure offers views across the ancient town and the mountains beyond. After the fort, a short stop at Al Hamra Old Village lets you see traditional mud-brick houses and feel the texture of Omani heritage before the road climbs toward the mountains.
The drive to Jebel Shams takes you up to 2,000 meters, where the landscape opens into Oman's Grand Canyon. Walking paths branch off in different directions (some short and easy, others long and steep), so you pick the route that fits your energy and the time you want to spend. The views drop away into valleys and wadis below, and the afternoon light shifts across the rock faces as you move through the terrain. In the late afternoon, the drive back to Muscat gives you time to settle before arrival.
