The experience
The route moves through three distinct landscapes. From Muscat you travel via Fanjah and Izki to Nizwa, the ancient capital, where you spend time in the souk and see the fort's exterior (note: the fort closes at 11:00 AM on Fridays, so entry inside is not guaranteed on those days). Then the drive climbs toward Jebel Shams, passing through Ghul, an old village with abandoned Persian ruins, and a weaving settlement famous for bright-colored rugs where you can haggle directly with local weavers. Picnic lunch happens near the rim at the top.
Jebel Shams, the highest peak in Oman, delivers views across Wadi Nakhr that shift with the light and the season. The stop there is built around the vista itself: time to walk, photograph and absorb the scale of the canyon below. On the way back to Muscat, the tour includes a stop in Misfat (also called Al Abrein), a village built into the mountainside, before the final drive home.
The vehicle is private: a sedan seats three passengers, or a 4x4 seats up to six, so your group travels together without sharing space with strangers. Hotel or port pickup and drop-off are included, as is bottled water and all national park fees. An English-speaking guide drives and narrates throughout. If you want to enter Nizwa Fort (not just view it from outside), add 15 USD per person at booking. The guide can arrange this, though Friday visits inside the fort are not guaranteed.
What’s included
- Private tour with English-speaking guide and round-trip private transfer from your hotel or port.
- bottled water throughout the day.

- fuel surcharge included in the price.

Is this one for you?Book the sedan if your group is three or fewer and you want a more intimate pace. Choose the 4x4 if you're traveling with a larger party or prefer extra space. The seven to nine hour duration means an early start and a full day of driving, so it suits travelers who want to see the highlands and the ancient capital without splitting the journey across two days.

Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 12 years); Infant (under 4): free.
What is Jebel Shams and why is it on this tour?
Jebel Shams is Oman's highest peak at 3,000 meters, and the tour climbs there specifically for the views of Wadi Nakhr, a massive canyon that the operator calls the Grand Canyon of Oman. The stop includes time to walk and photograph the landscape.
Can I go inside Nizwa Fort, or do I only see it from outside?
The tour includes a photo stop outside Nizwa Fort. To enter the fort itself, you can add an entry ticket for 15 USD per person at checkout. However, on Fridays the fort closes at 11:00 AM, so entry inside is not guaranteed if you book a Friday departure.
What happens at the weaving village and Misfat?
At the weaving village near Wadi Nakhr, you visit local weavers and can haggle for hand-woven rugs and textiles. In Misfat (Al Abrein), you stop to see the village itself, which is built into the side of a mountain and is known for its distinctive architecture.
