The experience
The journey starts in Muscat and takes two hours to reach Nizwa, crossing the Sumail Gap that divides the Western and Eastern Hajar Mountains. Nizwa Fort, built in the 1650s by Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya'rubi over an underground stream, anchors the evening. The fort took twelve years to complete and served as the administrative seat for the Imams and Walis through Oman's most turbulent periods. It is the country's most visited national monument. The Nizwa Souq sits just outside the fort walls and has housed local industries (daggers, copper work, livestock, fish and handicrafts) for hundreds of years, its alleys mixing traditional and modern architecture.
After the fort and souq, the route climbs toward the Saiq Plateau, stopping first at BirkatAlMouz, a date-palm oasis reached by driving between the farms. Here you see the falaj, one of Oman's oldest irrigation systems, and view the oasis from above. The plateau itself was accessible only by donkey for centuries and remains a remote village where you stop at a traditional coffee house, drink tea or coffee, and learn about how the old Omanis engineered water through the mountains. The tour covers Oman's history as a center of trade, education and art when Nizwa was the capital in the 6th and 7th centuries.

Top questions
What is inside Nizwa Fort and how long do we spend there?
Nizwa Fort is a 1650s structure built above an underground stream with twelve years of construction behind it. The fort was the administrative center for Oman's Imams and Walis and remains the country's most visited national monument. The tour includes entry and time to explore the fort's interior and grounds, though the exact duration depends on the group's pace through the structure.
What can I buy at the Nizwa Souq?
The Nizwa Souq has sold traditional Omani goods for hundreds of years: silver daggers, copper work, handicrafts, and local produce. The souq's many alleys and divisions reflect both traditional and modern architecture, and it sits just outside the fort walls, so you can move between the two easily.
What is the falaj and where do we see it?
The falaj is an ancient irrigation system engineered by Omanis to move water through the mountains and across the oasis. You see it at BirkatAlMouz, the date-palm oasis, and view it from above while standing in the village. A guide explains how the system works and its role in Oman's history.
How high is the Saiq Plateau and what is it like?
The Saiq Plateau is known as the roof of Oman and was accessible only by donkey for hundreds of years. It is a remote village where the tour stops at a traditional coffee house. You drink tea or coffee and learn about Omani culture and history in a setting that remains largely unchanged from its past.
Does the tour include meals or just drinks?
The tour includes bottled water, coffee and tea at the traditional coffee house on the Saiq Plateau. No meals are provided, though you have the option to purchase food at the souq or in the villages you visit.
