The Experience
The day starts with a drive from Muscat to Nizwa, Oman's old capital. Nizwa Fort is a 17th-century stronghold that now operates as a museum; walking through it gives you views of the ancient town and nearby mountains, and the fort itself shows how it was built to withstand military sieges. From there you move to Nizwa Souk, one of the country's oldest marketplaces, where separate blocks house fruit, vegetables, meat and fish—the layout and the goods on sale are unchanged from centuries back.
Bahla Fort comes next, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest and largest forts in Oman. The fort was restored and reopened in 2012 after major work; it sits at the foot of the Jebel Akhdar highlands and is surrounded by ancient walls. The final stop is Jabreen Castle, built in 1675 by Imam Bil Arab Bin Sultan. It is known for its battlements and fine preservation, and it was historically a center of learning where scholars studied astrology, medicine and Islamic law—the intricate ceiling paintings and rooms inside show the sophistication of Omani design from that era.
Your guide speaks English throughout the tour and handles the driving. Water is provided. The eight-hour itinerary is timed to fit all three sites without rushing; pickup and drop-off happen in the Muscat area. Entry to Nizwa Fort and Bahla Fort can be added at checkout; Jabreen Castle entry is separate and not part of any package option.

What is Nizwa Fort like when you walk through it?
Nizwa Fort is now a museum showing the history of the fort and the surrounding area. Walking inside, you see views of the ancient town and nearby mountains, and the structure itself reveals how it was built to hold off military attacks and sieges.
Can I buy things at Nizwa Souk, or is it just for looking?
Nizwa Souk is a working marketplace where you can browse and buy. It is one of the oldest souks in the country, with separate blocks for fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, plus traditional handicrafts, silver jewelry and aromatic spices.
How old is Bahla Fort and why is it important?
Bahla Fort is one of the oldest and largest forts in Oman and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1987—the only Omani fort with that status. It underwent major restoration and reopened in 2012.
What makes Jabreen Castle different from the other two forts?
Jabreen Castle, built in 1675, was designed as a center of learning for astrology, medicine and Islamic law, not primarily as a military stronghold. It is famous for its battlements, intricate ceiling paintings and beautifully preserved rooms that show the sophistication of Omani design.
