The experience

The day starts with a drive south from Muscat to Nizwa, Oman's old capital. Nizwa Fort dominates the town center: a military stronghold built to withstand sieges, now converted into a museum that walks you through the fort's layout and the region's history. From the ramparts you see across the ancient town and toward the mountains that frame it. The fortress itself is the anchor of the morning. Entry is separate from the tour price.

After the fort, the route takes you to Nizwa Souq, one of the country's oldest marketplaces. The souq spreads across separate blocks (fruit and vegetables in one section, meat and fish in another), and it moves at the pace of a working market, not a tourist stop. Your guide navigates the layout and explains what you're seeing. From there, the drive climbs toward Jebel Akhdar, passing through Birkat Al Mouz, a small town at the mountain's foothills where the ruins sit. Jebel Akhdar itself rises to 2,980 meters. The Saiq Plateau sits at 2,000 meters above sea level. The 4x4 handles the steep terrain and switchbacks that a regular car cannot manage.

The tour runs eight hours total, which is the time needed to move between these four sites and spend meaningful time at each one. Your guide speaks English throughout, and the vehicle carries bottled water for the journey. Hotel pickup and drop-off in the Muscat area are included, so you don't arrange transport to the starting point.
