The Experience
We nearly missed the turn for Nizwa — I was too busy staring at the mountains that sort of sneak up on you as you leave Muscat. Our guide, Salim, laughed and said everyone does that their first time. The drive is longer than I expected (almost two hours), but Omani radio plays quietly and there’s this smell of frankincense from Salim’s dashboard that sticks in your clothes. When we finally saw Nizwa Fort, it looked like something out of a storybook — but hotter, with kids chasing each other around the entrance.
Inside the fortress, Salim pointed out these tiny murder holes in the ceiling (I didn’t expect to hear about boiling date syrup as a defense tactic). The stone felt cool even though it was already mid-morning. You can see all of Nizwa town from up top — white houses, palm trees everywhere, and those jagged brown hills just past the walls. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m back home and everything feels too flat.
The souq next door was chaos in the best way — people haggling over pomegranates, someone grilling meat behind a cloud of smoke. I tried to buy some dried lemons but totally fumbled my Arabic; an old man just grinned and handed me a handful anyway. After that we drove to Birkat Al Mouz. The ruins are half-swallowed by banana trees now, and there’s this quietness except for birds and our shoes crunching on gravel. It’s strange how peaceful it feels compared to Nizwa’s noise.
Getting up Jebel Akhdar took a while (you need a 4x4 for sure), but suddenly it got cooler — like someone turned on AC outside. The air smelled different up there: kind of sweet, almost minty from all the terraces full of roses and fruit trees. We stopped at a viewpoint where Salim poured us bottled water and pointed out villages tucked into the cliffs. He said his grandmother still lives up here; I could see why she’d never want to leave.
