The experience

The tour departs from your Muscat hotel in a 4WD vehicle and heads inland toward Nizwa, the old capital. Nizwa Fort is the main stop: a fortress that now functions as a museum, with exhibits on the fort's military history and the surrounding region. Walking through it gives views across the ancient town and the nearby mountains. Next door sits the Nizwa Souk, a working marketplace selling jewelry, pottery, fish and other goods: a place to browse rather than a curated stop.

From Nizwa, the route climbs toward Jebel Akhdar. On the way up, you stop at Birkat al Mouz, an old village in ruins at the foot of the mountain, and then visit the Al Kattmyn irrigation system: one of five UNESCO-designated heritage irrigation systems in the region. These stops frame what Jebel Akhdar itself is: a green plateau dotted with fruit plantations and rose gardens, where you walk the hills and take in the valley below. The drive back to Muscat takes the afternoon.
