The Experience

By the time we reached Nizwa, the sun was already warming up the stone of the old fort. Our guide Khalid grinned as he handed us bottled water—“You’ll need this,” he said, and yeah, he was right. Climbing those spiral stairs inside Nizwa Fort, I could smell the faint tang of old wood and dust. The view from the round tower just sort of hits you—mountains all around, rooftops below, and that dry Omani wind pushing at your shirt. I tried to picture what it felt like defending this place centuries ago. Hard not to get lost in your head for a second.

The souk was already buzzing—men haggling over silver jewelry, women picking through dates. Someone offered me a tiny cup of cardamom coffee (I spilled half of it on my hand; Khalid just laughed). The smells are impossible to describe—spices, fruit, maybe even something metallic from all that antique silver. We wandered through narrow lanes where the walls are still rough and unpolished. I got distracted by an old man hammering out a bracelet—his hands moved so fast I almost missed it.

After Nizwa we drove past Bahla (Khalid pointed out some pottery workshops but we didn’t stop), then on to Birkat al Mouz. There’s something about seeing those banana plantations against crumbling mudbrick ruins that makes you think about time differently. The falaj irrigation channels trickle along quietly—you can hear water if you listen close enough. Onward again, winding up towards Jebel Akhdar—the Green Mountain. The air cools suddenly as you climb, windows down, orchards flashing by. At Diana Point we stopped for photos but honestly I just wanted to stand there and breathe for a minute. Roses weren’t blooming yet (wrong season), but you could still catch a hint of something sweet in the breeze if you paid attention.

We made it back to Muscat late afternoon with dust on our shoes and more photos than I’ll ever sort through. Still thinking about that view from the fort—and how Khalid tried to teach me “shukran” properly (I never quite got it right).
