The experience
Jebel Shams day trips depart Muscat and take roughly two hours to reach Nizwa, the old capital. The first stop is Nizwa Fort, now a museum that walks you through the fortress's military history and the views it commanded over the ancient town and surrounding mountains. From there you move to the Nizwa Souq, a working marketplace selling jewelry, pottery, fish and local goods, then head to Al Hamra village to see how residents lived in earlier times.
Before the final climb, the route passes through Misfah al Abryeen, a small settlement at the base of the mountain where a large Falaj water system irrigates the terraced vegetation below. Marked footpaths run through the village if you want to walk and explore. The drive then takes you up to Jebel Shams itself: no hiking involved, just a scenic stop at the summit to photograph the Grand Canyon of Oman spreading below. The return drive to Muscat takes about three hours.
A 4WD vehicle and English-speaking guide are included, along with hotel pickup anywhere in the Muscat area and bottled water for the day. Nizwa Fort entrance costs 5 OMR per person and is paid separately. This is the longest day trip available in Oman, so plan accordingly if you have other activities scheduled.
