The experience

The tour departs Muscat in a 4WD vehicle and heads to Nizwa, Oman's old capital. Nizwa Fort anchors the first stop: a fortress that served as a military base and now functions as a museum. Walking through it, you see views across the ancient town and the nearby mountains. The fort itself tells the story of the region's defensive history through its layout and construction.

From the fort, the route moves to Nizwa Souk, one of the country's oldest marketplaces. The souk is organized into separate blocks for fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, giving a clear sense of how the market has functioned for centuries. Then comes Al Hamra, a 400-year-old town that sits atop something older still: abandoned village ruins estimated to be 700 to 1,000 years old and left untouched. The contrast between the living town and the ruins beneath it is the draw here.

Jebel Shams, the highest peak in the Hajar range and in Oman itself, closes the day. It's known as Jabal Shams, the Mountain of the Sun, because it's the first place in the country to receive sunrise due to its elevation. The 8-hour tour includes an English-speaking guide, fuel, bottled water, and return transport to your Muscat hotel, airport or port.

Is this one for you?Eight hours is a full day commitment, which means you'll see four distinct sites (the fort, the souk, the old town and its ruins, and the mountain) without rushing through any of them, but it rules out other activities in Muscat on the same day.
