The experience

You're picked up from your Muscat hotel and driven inland toward Nizwa, the ancient capital. The journey itself passes through villages marked by charming gardens, lush plantations and traditional defense towers: the landscape shifts as you leave the coast behind. Once you arrive, the tour centers on three distinct stops that show different layers of Omani history and daily life.

Nizwa Fort is the architectural anchor of the day. Built in the mid-17th century by the Yaruba dynasty, it stands as a military stronghold designed to withstand siege, with defensive traps laid even in its corridors. Today it functions as a museum, and you walk through its many rooms and passages, climbing the towers to see the town spread below and the mountains rising beyond. The fort's design (its thick walls, narrow passages and strategic vantage points) tells the story of its original purpose without needing explanation.

Next is the Nizwa Souk, one of the largest traditional markets in Oman. The market halls are old and authentic, filled with vendors selling everything from fish and meat to pottery, jewelry and handicrafts. If you visit on a Friday, you'll see the cattle market in full swing: a circus-style open-air event where locals from nearby villages bring donkeys, goats, cattle, sheep and chickens to sell. The souk is where you'll find the silver jewelry and antiques the tour is known for, displayed among the everyday commerce of a working market.

The final stop is Birkat al Mouz, an old village at the foot of Jebel Akhdar surrounded by date and banana plantations. You see the village ruins and the traditional irrigation system of Al Kattmyn, then climb to a viewpoint where the landscape opens up. The drive back to Muscat follows, ending your day around 7 to 8 hours after pickup.
